What our numbers can and cannot do

A value flag means a bookmaker price was above our estimate of the fair price at a given moment. It does not mean the bet will win. Even a genuine long-term edge comes with long losing streaks: at typical football odds, runs of ten or more losing bets are normal. Past results, including ours, do not guarantee future results.

Set limits before you start

• Decide a budget you can afford to lose, and treat it as the cost of entertainment, not an investment.
• Use the deposit, loss and time limits your bookmaker offers.
• Never chase losses by betting more or at higher stakes.
• Take regular breaks, and do not bet when you are upset, tired or have been drinking.

Warning signs

Betting with money meant for bills, borrowing to bet, hiding it from people close to you, or feeling you need to bet more to get the same feeling are signs to stop and talk to someone.

• BeGambleAware (begambleaware.org) and GamCare (gamcare.org.uk): free, confidential advice.
• Your national gambling regulator runs a self-exclusion scheme that blocks you from licensed operators.
• Blocking software such as Gamban or BetBlocker stops access to gambling sites on your devices.
