Short answer. Over 2.5 goals means 3 or more goals in total after 90 minutes; under 2.5 means 0, 1 or 2. As of 3 November 2026, over 2.5 happened in 51.3% of 94,333 finished matches in our database (February 2020 to 2 November 2026): a little more than half. Leagues differ a lot, from about 61% in the Bundesliga and MLS to 36% in Argentina and 35% in Egypt. The market's chances were close to reality: when Pinnacle's closing price, with the margin removed, said about 55%, over 2.5 happened 56% of the time. A high chance does not make a price good value.

What over 2.5 goals means
Add up both teams' goals after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Three or more: over 2.5 wins. Zero, one or two: under 2.5 wins. So 2–1 is over, while 1–1 and 2–0 are under. Own goals count; extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not. A cup tie that is 1–1 after 90 minutes and ends 2–1 after extra time is under 2.5.
No match can have 2.5 goals, so the ".5" means every match is either over or under: no tie, and no refund (a "push"). Other lines work the same way:
- Over 1.5: 2 or more goals.
- Over 3.5: 4 or more goals.
How often over 2.5 happens: 51.3% of matches
We counted the 90-minute scores of 94,333 finished matches in 157 competitions, played from 14 February 2020 to 2 November 2026 and read from our database on 3 November 2026. They are the leagues, cups and international matches we track, not every match in the world. About 7 in 10 were played in 2025 or 2026, and friendlies are left out.

| 4 | Yes | 13,781 | 14.6% |
| 5 or more | Yes | 14,006 | 14.8% |
- Over 2.5: 48,352 matches, 51.3% (under 2.5: 48.7%).
- Over 1.5: 74.8%, about 3 matches in 4.
- Over 3.5: 29.5%, about 3 in 10.
The 2.5 line sits between the two most common totals, 2 and 3 goals (45.3% of matches between them), which is why over 2.5 is close to a coin toss on average. The rate is steady: between 48.4% and 52.9% in every year from 2020 to 2026, with 2.73 goals per match overall.

| MLS (USA) | 1,035 | 2025 | 61.4% |
| Bundesliga (Germany) | 1,920 | 2020 | 60.9% |
| Eredivisie (Netherlands) | 2,013 | 2020 | 59.4% |

| Primera División (Argentina) | 2,325 | 2022 | 35.9% |
| Egyptian Premier League | 402 | 2025 | 35.3% |
Even in the highest-scoring leagues, about 4 matches in 10 stay under 2.5. A league rate is only a starting point: each match has its own chance, which depends on the two teams and is best read from the price.
Does the market's over 2.5 chance come true?
Our calibration page takes Pinnacle's closing over/under 2.5 price (the last one before kick-off), removes the margin and compares that chance with what happened. As shown on 3 November 2026, on 3,710 matches played from mid-June to early November 2026, the market's chance → how often over 2.5 happened (matches):
- 27% → 25% (72)
- 36% → 42% (345)
- 46% → 47% (838)
- 55% → 56% (1,336)
- 64% → 63% (861)
- 73% → 71% (231)
The page also gives each band a chance-only range (95%): ±3 points for the three biggest bands, ±5, ±6 and ±10 for the others. Five bands land inside it. In the 36% band, over 2.5 happened 42% of the time, slightly outside its ±5 range; more matches will show whether that lasts.
So, on these matches, the margin-free price meant what it said: of 100 matches priced near 64%, about 63 went over and 37 did not. Even at 73%, 29 in 100 stayed under. One limit: closing prices include late news such as line-ups, while our daily pages show the latest price, which can be hours older.
How to read an over 2.5 prediction
On our pages, an over 2.5 prediction is a chance, not a pick: 60% means that of many matches priced like this one, about 60 in 100 go over. Fair odds are 1 ÷ the chance: 1 ÷ 0.60 = 1.67.
A bookmaker's price includes a margin. If over and under are both 1.90, each implies 1 ÷ 1.90 = 52.6%, or 105.3% together. Remove the extra 5.3 points and each side is 50%, fair odds 2.00 (bookmaker margin explained).
To compare a price with the fair chance, use its break-even rate: 1 ÷ the odds. At 1.80, over 2.5 must happen 55.6% of the time just to get your stakes back. If the fair chance is 52% (fair odds 1.92), 1.80 pays less than fair: over many bets like it, you would get back about 94 for every 100 staked.
A high chance is not value. Say over 1.5 has a fair chance of 80% (fair odds 1.25) and is priced at 1.20. It wins 4 times in 5, but 1.20 needs 83.3% to break even. A price is above fair only when its odds are higher than the fair odds, and even then a 52% chance loses 48 times in 100 (why win rate misleads).

How we measured
- Score: goals after 90 minutes; for matches that went to extra time, the 90-minute score stored with the result.
- Left out: 1,867 friendlies, one duplicate, and 3,127 cup, continental and international matches where our feed did not record whether extra time was played.
- Kept: 28,364 league matches without that record. Where it is recorded, under 3 league matches in 1,000 went to extra time or penalties, so at most about 70 of these could include extra-time goals: not enough to move the overall figures by 0.1 points.
- Checks: on the 65,969 matches with a recorded end, over 2.5 was 52.2%; without the 2,034 women's, youth and reserve matches, 51.0%.
FAQ
What does over 2.5 goals mean?
Three or more goals in total after 90 minutes, by either team. With 0, 1 or 2 goals, under 2.5 wins. The half goal means the bet can never tie.
Does extra time count for over 2.5?
No. Over/under 2.5 is settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra-time goals and penalty shoot-outs are left out.
How often do matches go over 2.5 goals?
In 51.3% of 94,333 matches in our database, from February 2020 to 2 November 2026 (as of 3 November 2026). Over 1.5 happened 74.8% of the time and over 3.5 29.5%. Some leagues are far above or below the average.
Is over 2.5 the same as both teams to score?
No, though the two agreed in about 78% of our matches. A 1–1 is both teams to score but under 2.5, and 11.9% of our matches ended 1–1. A 3–0 is over 2.5 with one team not scoring, and 10.3% of our matches went over that way.
How accurate are over 2.5 predictions?
A good one comes true about as often as it says. On 3,710 matches, when Pinnacle's margin-free closing price said about 55%, over 2.5 happened 56% of the time. Even at 73%, 29 in 100 stayed under: no chance, however high, tells you which matches will go over.
